Why North Carolina

A traveler's overview

North Carolina is three states. The mountains in the west, the piedmont in the middle, and the coastal plain stretching out to the Outer Banks. Asheville to Cape Hatteras is a full day's drive and they feel like different countries.

CurbNTurf hosts trend mountain — around Asheville, the Blue Ridge Parkway, and the southern Appalachians. Summers are humid and heavy; mid-October fall color in the high country is the best in the Southeast.

Things to do

Roads, food, and seasons in North Carolina

Drive the Blue Ridge Parkway from Asheville north to Boone — about three hours without stops, but plan a day. Mile 364 (Craggy Gardens), Mile 305 (Linn Cove Viaduct), and the Linville Falls overlook are all worth pulling over.

Asheville for breweries (Wicked Weed, Burial, Highland) and food (Cúrate, Buxton Hall). Hatteras for surf, ferry, and a full-week sand-and-fish vibe. Pick one or do both with a real driving day in between.

Hurricane season hits the Outer Banks late August through October. Keep a flex window. The mountains stay drivable in any season but the Parkway closes sections in winter.
