Why South Carolina

A traveler's overview

South Carolina is small and varied. The Lowcountry around Charleston is salt-marsh, oak alleys, and a Gullah cultural heritage that has lived along the coast for centuries. The Upstate is Blue Ridge country with whitewater rivers and the southern terminus of the Foothills Trail.

CurbNTurf hosts trend coastal — around Charleston, Beaufort, and the Sea Islands. Spring (March–May) and fall (October–November) are the comfort seasons; summer is humid and gnat-heavy; winter is mild and underrated.

Things to do

Roads, food, and seasons in South Carolina

Drive the Ace Basin between Charleston and Beaufort — slow rural roads through salt marsh and oak hammocks. Stop at Bowens Island Restaurant outside Charleston for cluster oysters with a hammer.

Charleston eating: Husk for Southern, Rodney Scott's for whole-hog barbecue, Leon's for oysters and gin and tonics, Lewis Barbecue for brisket. Reservations needed for the dinner spots; lunch is more flexible.

No-see-um gnats and mosquitoes are the summer reality on the coast — DEET and a screen tent are not optional. Hurricane season runs August–October; book flexible if you're traveling then.
