Why South Dakota

A traveler's overview

South Dakota is two distinct halves split by the Missouri River. East River is farm country and the lake belt around the river. West River is Black Hills, Badlands, and Lakota country — and the reason most people come.

CurbNTurf hosts trend west — Custer, Wall, the Spearfish Canyon area. Summer (June–early September) is the busy season around Mount Rushmore and the Sturgis Rally's footprint; September is the locals' favorite month.

Things to do

Roads, food, and seasons in South Dakota

Drive the Iron Mountain Road and Needles Highway (US-16A and SD-87) in Custer State Park — granite tunnels, pigtail bridges, and the Cathedral Spires. Plan a morning loop to avoid bus traffic.

Badlands at sunrise is the experience. Camp at Cedar Pass or stay nearby and drive in for first light at the Pinnacles Overlook. The Notch Trail is a quick scramble that rewards.

August Sturgis Rally turns the Hills into a 700,000-rider party. If you're not part of it, plan around the first two weeks of August. September is empty, cool, and stunning.
