Why New Mexico

A traveler's overview

New Mexico is the high desert at its most cinematic — adobe villages, red sandstone, juniper-piñon woodland that smells like the Southwest at sunrise. Northern New Mexico holds altitude that surprises people; Santa Fe is at 7,000 feet.

CurbNTurf hosts cluster around Santa Fe, Taos, and the Hatch chile valley in the south. Spring winds are real; July monsoon afternoons are spectacular. Fall is the locals' season.

Things to do

Roads, food, and seasons in New Mexico

Drive the High Road from Santa Fe to Taos (NM-503/76/518) instead of the river road. It threads through Chimayó, Truchas, and Las Trampas — old churches, weaving studios, and views toward the Sangre de Cristos.

Time a fall trip around Hatch chile season (late August through September). Buy a sack roasted in front of you and learn how to peel and freeze them.

Afternoon thunderstorms are the rule July through September. Plan high-country hikes for early morning. Sunsets are unreasonable in any season.
