Glacial lakes, river canyons, and more wilderness per capita than anywhere south of Alaska.

Why Idaho

A traveler's overview

Idaho is the wildest of the lower-48 states by most metrics — biggest contiguous wilderness, deepest river canyon, fewest people per acre once you get north of Boise. The panhandle around Coeur d'Alene feels like Montana; the Sawtooths feel like the Alps.

CurbNTurf hosts cluster around Sun Valley, the panhandle lakes, and the Snake River plain. Summer is short and bright; shoulder seasons are real; winter belongs to skiers and people who already know what they're doing.

Things to do

Roads, food, and seasons in Idaho

Drive the Sawtooth Scenic Byway (ID-75) from Ketchum through Galena Summit into Stanley. It's 60 miles, two hours with stops, and ends at the Salmon River with the Sawtooths laid out like a postcard.

Float a stretch of the Salmon — outfitter day trips out of Stanley, multi-day permitted runs deeper in. The Middle Fork is a bucket-list float; the lottery for non-commercial permits opens in January.

Wildfire smoke can drift in from late July through September. Check airnow.gov before committing to long valley drives. June and early October are the most reliable air-quality windows.
