Why Vermont

A traveler's overview

Vermont is small enough to drive end-to-end in three hours but rewards weeks of slow exploration. The Green Mountains run the spine; the Champlain Valley to the west is dairy and wine country; the Northeast Kingdom is the wildest and most underrated quarter.

CurbNTurf hosts trend farm and mountain — Stowe, Burlington area, the Mad River Valley. Fall foliage (last week of September through first week of October in the north) is the busiest week of the year. Book months ahead.

Things to do

Roads, food, and seasons in Vermont

Drive VT-100 the length of the state — Stamford to Newport, 217 miles of mountain spine. Plan a full day with stops in Weston, Killington, Waitsfield, and Stowe. Most traveled in foliage season for good reason.

Vermont eats well. Sample dairy at Cabot, Jasper Hill, and Shelburne Farms; eat at Hen of the Wood in Waterbury or Burlington; pick up Heady Topper at the Alchemist in Stowe.

Foliage peaks in the Northeast Kingdom around September 25, central state around October 1, southern state around October 8. Mud season (mid-April to mid-May) is real and dirt roads can become impassable.
