Ozark hollows, mountain springs, and one of the most underrated road-trip states in the South.

Why Arkansas

A traveler's overview

Arkansas surprises people. Forested ridges in the north hide some of the clearest rivers east of the Rockies. The Delta in the east is flat farm country and blues-trail towns. The Ouachita range in the west runs east-west — geologically rare and full of switchback drives.

CurbNTurf hosts in Arkansas tend to be on family land — cabin hollows around Eureka Springs, working orchards along the Buffalo River, quiet pads outside Hot Springs. Cell service is patchy in the hollows; plan offline maps before you roll in.

Things to do

Roads, food, and seasons in Arkansas

Float the Buffalo River in spring while it's still running. Summer water levels drop fast and what was a paddle becomes a drag. Outfitters in Ponca and Gilbert run shuttle service that pairs well with a multi-day base camp.

The Pig Trail Scenic Byway (AR-23) between Ozark and Brashears is short but spectacular — tight curves, hardwood canopy, almost no traffic outside fall foliage weekends.

Bring rain gear and bug spray May through August. Humidity is real, ticks are real, and afternoon thunderstorms roll up fast. Fall is the unanimous best season here.
